Teruel – Valdecebro
Prologue: 9.2km
TERUEL: Spaniard Xevi Pons showed a great form during the opening day of the 2016 Baja Aragon, that started today at Teruel and finished in the village of Valdecebro. Pons was second at the end of the 9.2km special stage driving his Ford Ranger supported by DMAS South Racing and Esponsorama, with a total time of 6:03.1. He was just 12.9s back of Nasser Al-Attiyah, the fastest today. Pons was able to choose the sixth starting place for tomorrow’s special stages, and together with his co-driver, Sergio La Fuente, he expects to shine.
Although the start was impressive, Pons prefers to keep his feet on the ground and wait for tomorrow results. It will be crucial to see how thins go in longer stages. “We are extremely happy after such a good start, but this is only the prologue and from tomorrow, the raid will be completely different, with longer stages. The car worked well, although we used it for the first time last week and I’m also getting used to my new co-driver. So definitely, it was a good start,” said Pons, who made his debut in cross-country rally at the last Dakar Rally. “I want to thank Raul, Antonio and all the people that makes this possible. We have two difficult stages ahead, with 160km and 180km, where we’ll have the chance to confirm that the car and ourselves are competitive. Today we are second, and I hope we can build on this momentum for tomorrow.”
Pons’s support for the Baja Aragon comes from Air Europa, Power Electronics and King Regal. South Racing has also support from Rudy Project, OMP, TW Steel, Gold Nutrition and Michelin.
